Frequently Used Terms

CHAI - Clinton Health Access Initiative.  My work organization.

GHC - Global Health Corps.  My fellowship organization.

Burera - Burera District.  One of the 30 governmental districts of Rwanda.  This is where I spend most of my time Monday through Friday.  Burera is mountainous, rural, beautiful, and cold.

The Field - Generally speaking, this means Burera.  It also means actually going out into health facilities to do supervision visits, collect data, and ride on extremely bumpy roads in our company's SUVs.

Kigali - Rwanda's capital city and where I spend my weekends.  Also fondly known as Kigz or KGL (after the airport code).

Kimihurura - My neighborhood in Kigali, also fondly known as Kimihux.

Paul Kagame - genius, fearless president of Rwanda.  Also fondly known as PK.

Mzungu - the story is that this word was originally used to describe colonial explorers because it means "one who wanders without a destination".  Today, it just means white person.  Or, in a tongue-in-cheek way, a Rwandan who has been westernized.
